Kaplan is worth considering if you want a taught method and study structure. If you already have Kaplan, first review what you have used and what still feels difficult. Buying a second NCLEX question bank makes more sense when you can name a gap it fills than when you simply want a larger question total.
This guide covers NCLEX-RN preparation. It compares the current advertised offers and gives you a way to judge the explanations yourself; it is not a hands-on course evaluation or a prediction that a particular resource will make you pass.
Already have Kaplan? Do you need a second question bank?
Start with a small review of your recent practice. For each missed question, write down the cue you missed, why the best option fits, and why your chosen option was weaker. Our worked prioritization question and review worksheet show what this kind of review can look like without requiring an account.
Then identify the gap:
- Unfinished questions and unread explanations: use the material you already have before buying another bank. A new subscription adds work to the same schedule; it does not create more study time.
- Content you cannot explain: revisit the relevant lesson or content-review chapter, then return to questions. Another set of unfamiliar stems may not address a missing foundation.
- Remembering an answer rather than reasoning through it: consider fresh questions after reviewing the existing explanations. Try a sample first and check whether it makes you explain the decision, rather than recognize a familiar letter.
- Still unable to explain a tempting wrong option: compare how another resource explains that option. A different explanation or language may help you understand the reasoning; do not assume a larger bank automatically provides that difference.
Before paying, complete this sentence: “I need ___, and the sample shows this resource provides it because ___.” If you cannot fill it in, pause the purchase. This is a study-planning suggestion, not a rule that everyone needs only one bank.
What the Kaplan QBank and courses include
The counting labels matter. Kaplan's self-paced RN course page currently advertises 3,800+ practice questions in its course highlights while separately describing a 2,200+ QBank. The page does not reconcile those figures into one selectable-bank total. Do not add them together or assume every course question belongs to the QBank.
The same offer lists an 18-hour review course, 3 CATs, 6 review sessions, content-review material and the Decision Tree method. Choose it for the mix of teaching and practice you will actually use.
The live-online RN course adds scheduled instruction: its highlights describe three days totaling 18 hours, 3 CATs and 3,800+ practice questions. If a class schedule helps you keep moving, compare that format with self-paced study. Confirm your selected plan's access term and included resources before enrolling.
Use the seven-day QBank trial to check fit
Kaplan offers a seven-day QBank trial. Its page describes customizable quizzes, explanations and performance charts. The trial terms allow one trial per user and say access begins on the first login. They do not specify that a trial includes every question in the paid bank.
Use the trial to answer three practical questions:
- Can you explain why your tempting wrong answer is weaker after reading the feedback?
- Can you find the topic or item format you need to practise?
- Can you fit answering and reviewing into the time you actually have, on the device you normally use?
Write down the answers before comparing subscriptions. Question count is useful context, but it does not tell you whether the teaching suits you.
When to compare UWorld or Saunders instead
Compare UWorld if fresh practice and a different explanation style are your main needs. Its NCLEX-RN page lists plan-dependent practice totals and self-assessments, with CAT practice and NGN questions. Check the specific plan and access term; its advertised total and Kaplan's labeled QBank count are not the same counting basis.
Compare Saunders if you want a book-led content review. Elsevier's Saunders 9th-edition page lists 5,700 questions in the book and online, with rationales for correct and incorrect answers. Kaplan also includes content review, so the choice is about the format you will use, not a claim that only Saunders teaches content.

For exam coverage, use NCSBN's 2026 NCLEX-RN test plan, effective April 1, 2026 through March 31, 2029. Check both the content areas and clinical-judgment item formats. A product's marketing claim or a practice percentage does not establish your probability of passing.
